John Jarratt

John spent 43 years in the commercial design business after studying in Newcastle upon Tyne and gaining his NDD. Design for print, design for advertising, for Point of Sale, for marketing, for PR and many other areas. He worked in studios, agencies and for many years as a freelance graphic designer.

During that time as well as design, he undertook paste-up, lettering, typography, model-making, photography, copywriting and a fair amount of detailed line illustration. This latter was for major clients like Citroen, Belling, The Post Office, Trusthouse Forte, Intercontinental Hotels and many others.

“Only a small amount of colour illustration was called for and, unfortunately, painting was not part of my initial training. So when, during the last couple of years of work, I began planning my artistic future I was in certain respects just a beginner. Thus I feel I can say with some truth that as a painter I am self-taught.”

During the last few years John has won a number of awards both locally in Hertfordshire and at a couple of national exhibitions. He has also recently completed a month's exhibition in the New Maynard Gallery, Welwyn Garden City selling over half of the pictures exhibited.

John’s paintings are in many private collections both near at hand and further afield in the UK as well as in the USA and Europe.
